As far as being known for an over the top party city, Miami has the check on that, but over the years the art scene in many parts has grown tremendously. The interesting aspect of these eye catching and senses stunning events are the locations throughout Miami that can take you from the arts Wynwood district to besides the ocean in the Grove and gorgeous South Beach. Mostly including modern and contemporary art, the events offer not only art but also they make sure to satisfy your ears and mouths with incredible music and food.
Locations throughout the city at the start of December
The premier art event in South Florida. Art Basel, being a series of art events throughout the city, is perfect for the art lover . It offers many different galleries, hotels, venues, etc…. which showcase the best contemporary art displays at many of Miami’s swankiest venues, art districts, and hotspots all over the city. After that kickoff event, the city is filled with many similar functions throughout the Design district, Wynwood district art walk, downtown, and South Beach.
Main area located at Peacock Park in February
This art festival covers more than 5 blocks. Along with the ocean breeze and the warm weather, the locale is perfect to stroll up and down while viewing beautiful art and enjoying great eats! The people of Miami really looks forward to this big event because of not only the art but also it’s a huge reunion for locals on Sunday at the Peacock Park section. This area has live bands, many stations to buy drinks and cool off from the Miami sun and where you’re going to eventually run into someone you know because locals make it a habit to go every year.
Between 20th St. and 36 St. and N.W. 2 Ave. in the Wynwood District
Art lovers, this is a monthly event that really keeps your senses on their toes. On the second Saturday of each month this area of Miami called the Wynwood district offers a nice walk through galleries one after another. All free of charge featuring different styles of art, plus many offering drinks to keep your body moving through the night. Along with the galleries the Wynwood district has grown and houses good restaurants and local bars. It’s also very close to Midtown which is a large area of shops, restaurants, and nightlife so that large area is perfect to spend on a Saturday night.
Located in the heart of Coral Gables, stretching all of Miracle Mile
This block long music festival is a cure for the work week. Offering fabulous bands day/night, great food, and local bars ready to serve their best. Not only is the event free but also houses local artists and craftsman with booth displays right along the middle of Miracle Mile. This is definitely a hassle free event just because everything, including the art displays plus the restaurants, shops and cafe’s are on that one road. Plus a really good date locale because of the long stretch on Miracle Mile of spots to travel in and out of while enjoying the event.
Starting on Ponce De Leon and continuing through the Gables’ streets
In the winter starting on the first Friday of every month from 7-11 pm, Coral Gables has a free art walk through its historic streets starting on Ponce De Leon. Park along any of the adjacent streets and get there early because some of the galleries/art salons and stores displaying the art hand out complimentary wine. This event is really laid back because the streets never get smothered with people so you’re able to go in and out of each one and pretty much see them all. After the event, make sure to enjoy the rest of the Friday night happening restaurants and lounges which are filled with TGIF energy!
Domino Plaza, at SW 15th Ave & 8th St
On the last Friday of every month from 7-11 pm this stretch of the famous Calle Ocho will definitely give you a sense of the major Cuban culture that Miami contains. Vibrant colors in art works is the majority of the influence due to the memories expressed from the beautiful Cuban landscapes. End the month with this super nice walk and make sure to taste the latin dishes and then move your body to the live bands along the streets. Plus there’s a Miami Trolley leaving from the Mary Brickell Village and the Brickell Metrorail/Metromover Station to the heart of the Viernes Culturales festival every 15 minutes, starting at 6:30 pm!
On Lincoln Road in South Beach between Washington Ave and Alton Road
Inside the high energy and party atmosphere of South Beach lies Lincoln Road. Offering many restaurants, bars, and stores in this long stretch, Lincoln also contains galleries including one the famous Romero Britto, which showcase contemporary art, sculptures and objects. On the first Saturday of each month from 7-11 pm, take a stroll through this culture filled traffic free road and make sure to visit The Art Center which offers mentorship programs, gallery space and public art classes that engender a world of enthusiastic support for aspiring artists and creative people who want to try their hand at design, drawing, painting, photography and jewelry making.
